"You have ADHD"

Sent to the clurb · Jul 2024

The exact words were actually - “Looks like you have both inattentive and hyperactive ADHD.”

Ok so probably not a surprise to some of you, but HOLY. MOLY.

After quitting my job I had a few weeks of decompression mixed with the bliss of floating around my apartment all day in my hoodie sipping tea and creating without any real time constraints.

Immediately after, I used my “wee I’m free” high to put together my first Journaling Workshop Party 🪩 and put out a few YouTube videos that included a pretty sweet deal with THE Bullet Journal team.

But once all my deadlines were met, Abbey was home on vacation, family visited for 30 days, and I temporarily stopped working with my life coach.

Basically the only bits of routine remaining after quitting my job disappeared and were replaced with things that’ll make a neurotypical brain run rampant like the 7 kids I got to hang out with.

And as I’ve been learning about my “new” self and ADHD I’ve realized structure is like…. mega important for keeping my brain on track.

Some of the ADHD things that were cranked up during this time:

🛌 I was struggling more than normal to just “do” things

🙉 Instead of having 11 thoughts going on in my brain at once it was like 22

📚I was starting new things left and right - mostly books and courses tho!

😈 I became WAY more risk tolerant - I committed to a $10,000 women’s health coaching program and I’ve been walking Tobi after sunset when the roaches start to surface

😦 I was forgetting everything - the existence of my car, to open a jar literally just handed to me, and even the appointment for my ADHD assessment LOL

😬 And unfortunately, interrupting Abbey more than usual…

But the combination of all these things, along with 3 fellow ADHD-ers asking if I had ever been assessed, and YouTube recommending videos like “I found out I have ADHD” wasn’t what convinced me to schedule an appointment...

It was when someone had casually stated, “ADHD is a superpower.”

I love the idea of having a superpower - even if it includes never knowing where your (almost dead) phone is at, leaving the garbage disposal on and forgetting about it, or turning in your taxes 15 minutes before they’re due.

I like to think I can already do anything - so a superpower to aid me in doing anything sounds very intriguing.

I had been coping all my life by latching onto external systems that worked for me - like friends reminding me to submit assignments, Abbey happily announcing “time for bed!” at 9pm, or the Bullet Journal Method which happens to be created by someone with ADHD (it's like... how did I not see the signs).

I didn’t know what getting diagnosed would do for me…but now that I know that my special brain is the internal system that ultimately dictates whether I’m going to spiral everyday or spend 12 hours on a new project - I can either be extra forgiving to myself or again, do anything I want - like learn how it works and double down on the things that get it to ✨ thrive ✨

In truth, I've had an inkling about this for a while but I was scared of what it might mean to go and get assessed and find out I didn't have it.. I was also scared of finding out I did have it. And I didn't even know what I was scared of. I couldn't come up with any rational reason for being scared. I still can't lol.

So here's a few journaling prompts:

What are you scared of doing right now?

Is there any objective, solid proof that whatever you're scared of actually exists or will happen?

If you did what you're scared of how could it change your life?

Will you still be alive after you face this fear?

✌🏾TTYL!✌🏾
