You probably already know my story this past year and if you don’t, here it is in a pistachio shell: I’m a physical therapist turned entrepreneur.

Prior to quitting my job I studied a lot of successful entrepreneurs and their journey. The result: Nobody said it was easy, but everybody said it was the best decision of their life.

So I knew I’d be stressed having to bust my ass to make things work. But damn, the EMOTIONS. Particularly two of them that I’ve been experiencing to the maximum major right now that have been ruining my progress.

Impatience 🤬

I’ve been guilty of being impatient on several occasions. I remember an annoying phrase my mom used to say to me in the car as a kid in a booster seat wanting to get home after a “long” day of grocery shopping.

“whining isn’t gonna get you there any faster.”

It’s annoying because it’s true. But it’s actually helpful in the sense that it makes it very clear that we must accept that there is a distance that needs to be covered in order to get to the destination. duh.

Here are the consequences of wanting and trying to do 80mph in a 45 - aka impatience:

🏎️ you’ll likely start road raging (frustration)

🏎️ you get a ticket (slowed progress)

🏎️ you crash (never get there)

🏎️ you crash into someone else (wrecked reputation and still never get there)

🏎️ you get lucky, make it, and continue to risk all of the above

Once we accept the distance we have to cover to our destination, it feels so much better to put yourself in cruise control and enjoy your guilty pleasure playlist. You might even decide to take the scenic route and come across more life changing experiences than dirty rest stop bathrooms and gas station hot dogs.

Envy 👺

This an emotion that I believe is quite rare for me have because I LOVE to see people thrive. BUT when I did experience this it was about people who were around my age driving expensive cars and traveling the world debt free. “Must be nice to be able to buy a brand new Jeep and travel to Antartica when you're spoiled.”

Gosh, it even makes me cringe and ashamed now to even type that.

Anyway, I quickly realized that I was sabotaging my own progress by comparing myself to someone who has what I want. So instead, I changed my focus to understanding that I can have that too, and more.

I’ll get to what I did to overcome these emotions in a minute but first some questions to drive home the point:

Have you ever seen Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps stare at the person next to them during the race? When they train do you think they’re like, “I’ve been training for days, why can’t I shave 5 seconds off my time yet?”

They just stay in their lane and focus on THEM and what they have to do that’s in front of them. every. single. day. for as long as it takes.

I know you’re likely not striving to be a history making olympic gold medalist x400 or whatever (or are you? pls tell me lol) but here’s how it’s relevant to staying in your own lane.

Envy is actually manifested from fear and it’s often disguised by being judgey - the fear of not having what you want and the belief that there’s not enough out there for you too. Once I learned this, it was much easier for me to acknowledge my envy, understand where it’s coming from, and then take actionable steps to address that.

Envy: Being debt free

Fear: I’ll never be financially free

Action steps: focus on building a business

THE JOURNALING PROMPTS (dun dun)

For Impatience:

What areas in my life am I’m being impatient in?

How has this made me feel?

What can I do to make the ride more enjoyable?

For Envy: (taken from the book: Manifest In Action)

Who or what do I envy?

When have you disguised your envy as judgement or criticism of someone else?

What other emotions come with this envy?

What wound is the envy guiding you to?

What is it revealing about yourself?

What would be a compassionate response to the wound that you could offer yourself now?

What practical steps can you take to heal the envy?

I did this exercise just this morning and here’s some of my answers:

I strongly encourage you to actually write these out and really think about your answers. If you don’t have an answer, just sit longer and wait for it to come to you.

Wishing you a fun and fulling road trip on whatever your journey is 🧡

✌🏾TTYL!✌🏾
