The other 5 things I do to get out of ruts...

Sent to the clurb · May 2024

Hi Friend!

Listen to my actual voice reading this email here.

A while back I shared the 5 out of 10 things I do outside of my journal that help get me out of ruts. (I’ve linked it at the end of this email for reference)

Just so we’re clear, my definition of a rut is like…. waking up and not wanting to do anything, even though you have this nagging feeling to do everything - but then proceeding to do nothing. And then you do that over and over again until you finally do SOMETHING to get it to stop. Your definition of a rut might be different, but these are the other 6 SOMETHINGs that I do to get out of rut land.

6. Bougie Costco bath 🛀🏾

Sometimes we end up in rut land because we’re just exhausted and stressed. Science says magnesium is like the first chemical that’s depleted from the body when we’re like this - ever had twitchy eyelids? Science also says it’s absorbed fastest through the skin. Good thing Costco sells magnesium loaded epsom salt for like 10 bucks for two bigass bags (lol not sponsored). Take a quiet, warm bath with epsom salt right before bed and omg. Night night.

7. Piggybacking 🐖🐖🐖

Idk if altruism is real or not but I don’t wanna debate it either. But I’ve found that whenever I love, praise, or celebrate something that’s alive and doing well- a plant, an animal, a person, hell even just like, a barnacle - I always feel better. It’s pretty easy to be sour or envy other people when you’re in an unhappy place, but if we can piggyback off of any sort of positive energy, why not? “Great job holding on ya crusty little barnacle! You inspire me.”

8. LOL 😂

  • Rick and Morty
  • Schitts Creek
  • The Office
  • Modern family
  • Not for everyone podcast
  • A 5 min tangent about a stupid hypothetical situation that you and your friend are now laughing uncontrollably about.

Whenever I consume this content in moderation or partake in silly conversations, I always feel lighter and more optimistic. Don’t forget to indulge in opportunities that might bring you laughter. Science.

9. Go to the Jim 👟

As much as we might hate hearing the word “eXErciSE” it’s undeniably one of the best ways to quickly get our sh*t together. Whenever I’m in a trash mood, feel overwhelmed, and “have no time to go to the Jim” - going to Jim is literally the exact thing I need 99.34% of the time. Walk on the treadmill at a sweat inducing speed and laugh with my favorite YouTubers for 30 min? Double whammy.

Also for some strange reason using Jim in this spelling as either a noun or verb makes it a little more comical for me when I can’t bear to continue being serious, mad, and sad.

10. Phone a friend (but reverse) 📲

When I used to have some of the WORST days at work, I’d get in the car and phone a friend - but not to vent to them - I’d just ask what they’re up to and catch up on life. This could open up an opportunity for piggybacking or LOLing too. I’d just make it a point to try to talk about anything but whatever I was feeling like crap about especially if I knew I was just “over processing” and digging a deeper rut hole to stay in even longer.

BONUS: Glow up 💅🏾

Ok I don’t mean in the like, growing out of your awkward teen phase from when you had side bangs and glasses that took years to phase out… Just get dressed and go somewhere. The other day I was going to a 3 year olds birthday party. I felt like shit and I felt like I looked like shit. Abbey said I looked “normal” - and that’s when I knew it was just my attitude making everything shit. So I decided to “dress up” more - and dang. I’m embarrassed of how much better I felt. And when you’re going to a 3 year olds birthday party, you gotta be primed in some sort of way to survive lol.

I know none of this is information is breaking news… but honestly when a whole month of feeling “meh” goes by, you tend to forget how revisiting the simplest things can go a long way.

Here’s the link to the first 5 thingies I did btw.

As for a journaling prompt: Just list all 10 + 1 of these things in your journal and add your own. Save the page for gloomy seasons, refer to it as a reminder, and pick the easiest thing on the list to try out on the harder days.

✌🏾TTYL!✌🏾

P.S. Try combining any of these for extra mood boosting power!

P.S.S. Per usual I enjoy knowing what you like to do for these types of situations. Hit reply and lemme knowwww.
