Maybe we should use another word for this?

Hi friend,

You know what I have a love-hate relationship with?

Deadlines.

It's become even more of an aggravating term after I found out that the origin of the word is in reference to a physical line or boundary within or around prison camps during the Civil War.

Prisoners who crossed this line were often at risk of being shot, hence the "dead" in deadline.

I'm sorry, what?

The fact that society has normalized the use of this word for stuff like submitting reports that nobody wants to read, taxes, or even signing up for what you're bringing to a bake sale is kinda crazy? no?

So I'm vowing to never use that word for myself or on anyone else.

Instead, I'll be using terms like:

​"Polish-limit": so that I don't spend ages writing emails like this

"Best by": so that I know there's a benefit to doing something by a certain date (like eating my Chobani yogurt before Oct 2nd to have a more enjoyable experience than after...)

or...

"Make a move by": so that I don't waste time wallowing in indecision when I could've already got going

or whatever other somewhat clever term I come up with

I understand that these words or phrases aren't as punchy (or threatening) as the word DEADLINE - and maybe that's why we adopted this hardcore term that drives people to do things.

But there's gotta be a better way to frame motivation using other words...

P.S. I came up these terms within a few minutes because I gave myself a polish limit of 30 minutes to write this email. Very helpful if you identify as a perfectionist - you just have to be ok with stuff like minor typos.
