One of the most stressful years of my life was when I was 29. Stupidly it was because I was constantly freaked out about turning 30 and feeling like I had nothing significant to show for it after blowing out my 20s. Sure, I was kicking off my career as a Doctor of Physical Therapy upon entering a new decade of my life… but with $150,000 of student loan debt and no real assets beyond my 20 year old honda civic, I was feeling super *****d in life. If you can guess what the ‘B’ word is, you’ve probably said it in the same context at some point as well. I didn’t realize this until recently, but I unintentionally stopped saying that word. Good for me right? That is until we started looking at homes in Hawaii. Good lort almighty. Clearly, nothing’s getting cheaper (and yes, I’ve been told interest in the real estate market is projected to come down blah blah), I’m not getting younger, and seeing that my brother who’s 6 years younger than me is already a house hacking home owner with a split level in Colorado Springs - I was tempted to use the jabbing ‘B’ word to describe my situation. Because yes, I was starting to feel *****d in life again. I’ve been keeping various records of my life progress since I was a bitter, whiny, 29 year old millennial wearing woe-is-me victim goggles. Thankfully those records also consisted of teensy tiny wins and massive celebrations - a great reference when I wanna mutter the unhelpful ‘B’ word and pout about all the other people that are “ahead” of me. My brother and I have joked that if we had to climb to the top of the same mountain he’d be excited to go off trail, battle a bear, and sleep standing up on his way there. But me? I’m taking the scenic route up the mountain. In fact, I’d probably be a tour guide on the way. Me: “So to your left is the end of my physical therapy career and the birth of my business.” My brother: *becomes a marine and adapts to living in near squalor for extended periods* The thing is, neither way is better than the other. Even tho my brother is a homeowner he might say, “I’m not married… I feel *****d in life.” Pretty stupid to be comparing right? I’m not behind in life. My brother isn’t behind in life. You’re not behind in life. We’re all still figuring our shit out - what pace to go at, when to pivot, what’s enough, and what’s for dinner after a long day of work. Where you wanna go and the pace you wanna move at is your biz and nobody else’s. Keep a record of your progress, both the wins and losses. It fortifies your brain and naturally erases the ‘B’ word from your everyday vocabulary. The journaling prompt: What can you change to move at a pace that you feel good at? Do you needa slow down? speed up a lil? or what do you gotta do to stay in cruise control? ✌🏾TTYL!✌🏾 Simie P.S. Abbey and I signed a lease today to remain as renters and not homeowners.
