I never thought I'd try this...

Listen to this 3 min and 46 second email here!

Screamo metal music blasting, sweat flinging in the air, heavy objects banging, abdominals that look like washboards, and TV screens labeled 🔥INTENSITY🔥 and 🔥PERFORMANCE🔥

Umm what did I just walk myself into…?

CrossFit ☠️

Before this moment my opinion of CrossFit was heavily biased because I often used to treat the aftermath when I worked in the clinic.

In my mind I pictured it like this: go to CrossFit, do 1 million deadlifts, get injured, repeat.

Every time someone came in with a back, shoulder, or elbow injury from CrossFit I wouldn’t be surprised.

Good ole confirmation bias at it’s finest.

So why on earth did I even bother going in the first place?

Aside from the fact that it’s a 2 min walk from our apartment, it was mostly because I recognized my closed mindedness. And if I’m gonna be on the internet encouraging people to, “explore”, “try new things”, and “be open minded” I gotta do the same right?

As soon as we walked in we were greeted by a ginormous individual who resembles Thor 🧔🏼‍♀️ He gently welcomed us before nonchalantly segwaying into, “we’re going to be working on our hand stand walks today.”

I’m sorry…. what?

After being shooketh by the ambience (if we’ll call it that), the thought of attempting to walk on my hands, and the debrief with the exercises, time intervals, and reps I could feel the overwhelm causing my already overstimulated head to spin.

I had two choices for how I was going to approach this next hour:

👉🏾 ruin my first CrossFit experience with my preexisting negative beliefs and try to prove my bias’s right

OR

👉🏾 have a beginners mindset and lean into having a positive open mind to actually try to enjoy myself

Because I was aware that I even had these choices I was able to avoid naturally slipping into what I thought I already knew about CrossFit.

After getting absolutely wrecked from head to toe, Abbey and I happily committed to the annual membership

We love the classes, the instructors, and the community. Plus, I don’t have to spend any mental energy on what I’m going to do for exercise for an entire year.

A huge blessing ✨🥵✨

So does this mean I think CrossFit for everyone?

No.

Do I still think it’s a breeding ground for injuries?

It depends.

Did I almost block a blessing by being close minded and sticking to my negative assumptions?

Yup.

It’s perfectly fine and encouraged to approach things with a skeptical mind. But this was a great reminder that associations and assumptions, both start with “ass” and aren’t actual research.

The Journaling Prompts:

What’s an activity or habit that you initially resisted but later embraced?

How did your mindset shift, and what positive outcomes did you get out it?

on the flip side….

What’s something you’ve avoided trying because of preconceived ideas or fear?

What could happen if you gave it a fair shot?

Have fun with these!

✌🏾TTYL!✌🏾

P.S. I jokingly put it in my journal that I want to be able to do a handstand. I wonder if I can get there by Halloween to automatically upgrade my Spiderman costume 😂
