Hi friend, So this morning during my breakfast break, I ended up doing a longer than anticipated reflection after watching Matt D'Avella's gutsy video on self-help gurus. They were never supposed to receive this email, so it landed in their inbox like a spammy promotional email – but from someone you thought you could trust. Rightfully so, they were really upset about it because it felt like I was manipulating them after they disclosed their financial struggles... And if they felt like that, it made me wonder if the others had felt like that too. I replied to the pictured email above and apologized, but also cautioned them of potentially "demonizing any creator who sells anything." Despite there being truly shitty people trying to capitalize on vulnerable groups of people, figuring out how to monetize your work challenges your character – no matter how honest you actually are. But regardless, this was a hard and sucky thing to reflect on because while I was genuinely excited to share this offer and give something of value, I realized my actions were driven from my shadow need of wanting to be liked and attaching my self-worth to helping people. Matt's video perfectly captured both how this subscriber was (probably) feeling and how I was feeling – the desire to receive and share honest work. I'm currently working on being more open in sharing my current process rather than sharing recaps of my process – and it's f*cking scary. Normally, I like to go on the journey and then come back and be like, "Hey guys!, here's what I've learned." But what I'm learning is that I need to be inviting you with me on the journey. Perhaps this is the best "tactic" of them all? 🤔 I've been using the journaling app 750words, for over a year now and I talk about it in my next video. So in the spirit of having fun and sharing more of my process, I thought I'd give you guys a head start on looking into using this app for yourself to help you create positive changes in from reflections. I'm sharing my report here for today's journal entry for you to get an idea of what it can do for you and to practice sharing the stuff that I'm still processing on the journey. Moving forward, I'm always going to keep Matt's video in mind but I wanna know from you: Why were happy to buy from a creator? When were times where you got the ick? If you run a successful business, how do you sell your work without getting caught up in manipulative marketing? Hit reply and tell me. Sweating profusely, Simie P.S. Nothing in this email is sponsored, although it would be cool if Matt asked me to share his vid with you guys lol. P.P.S. Using the report maker in 750words led me to finding a potential dream job to compliment my current dream job, but more on that later. Just leaving this teaser here to help keep me accountable to sharing the process. |
